Heritage Home – Brougham Street

Jeremy Smith – Irving Smith Architects

This project involved modernising the interior of one of Nelson’s grand historic homes, a property many in the region may recognize – 46 Brougham Street. Set back on a sloping section, this private residence was originally designed in the 1930s for Charles Griffin, a member of the well-known Griffin family behind the iconic Griffin Biscuit and Confectionery business.

The house holds a Heritage New Zealand List Category 2 rating and was designed by architect Arthur Griffin for his cousin Charles. The Griffin family’s history is steeped in resilience and entrepreneurship, with Griffin & Sons Ltd. flourishing after overcoming a devastating factory fire in the mid-1890s.

Tim and Rachel’s renovation began upstairs, where we insulated and updated wall linings, added new wardrobes, and modernized the bathrooms while preserving the character of this historic home. Working on such a significant property has been a rewarding challenge for our team, and we’re thrilled to have been part of this project.

Testimonial

“Jason Gardiner Builders recently carried out renovations to the upstairs storey of our heritage home (historic place category 2). The renovations came in within both budget and the estimated timeframe.

The quality of workmanship was excellent, and nothing was a problem. Jason and his team were professional, and a real pleasure to work with. We can highly recommend Jason Gardiner Builders, and we look forward to using them again for our downstairs renovations.”
